March began with a beautiful warm weekend on the Pennisula, followed by strong onshore winds through mid week. Net result is our first 'bloom' of the new year with chlorophyll biomass increasing dramatically over the trend in Jan-Feb samples (ca. 23x to 3.68 ug/L net, ca. 3.5x to 21.73 ug/L total by in vivo fluorescence). The phytoplankton community was dominated by chain forming diatoms with Phaeocystis spp. following closely behind. Pseudo-nitzschia were present (3,352 cells/L, 77% seriata size class). Dinoflagellates were rare.

Another sunny cool day followed the early morning fog.  Net chlorophyll biomass decreased from last week (ca 30x to <0.03 ug /L) as did total chlorophyll (ca 3X decline to 7.75 ug/ L, by in vivo fluorescence).  The sparse phytoplankton community was led by small (<2um) flagellates and dinoflagellates including Akashiwo sanguinae, Ceratium macroceros and Prorocentrum micans (<500 cells / L).  Only empty frustules of Pseudo-nitzschia (ca 1,200 cells /L, seriata class) were observed.  The community turnover was associated with appearance of comb jellies (ca 4 cm BL; 4 / m^3), calanoid copepods (2-3mm BL; 1,700 / m^3) and small medusae were common.  Mackerel and a sea otter pair rounded out the megafauna.

A beautiful sunny but cold morning greeted the return of the MWII samplers. Water was calm and dark, yet clear (VIS > 5m). Net chlorophyll biomass was 1.52 ug /L and total chlorophyll 23.23 ug/ L (by in vivo fluorescence) accounting for the greenish tinge. While the expected winter dinoflagellate population was present, dominated by Akashiwo sanguinae (6,238 cells/L), this observer was surprised by the abundance of Pseudo-nitzschia (67,574 cells /L, 98% seriata class, >10 cell chains common). This mixed assemblage is similar to what has been reported over the last few weeks by the SCW station on the north side of the bay. Large calanoid copepods (2-3mm BL) were active in the sample.
